Gas alarm in the front line
National Library of Scotland
This trench, which is not very wide or deep, has been roofed over to provide a cover for the bell which is the gas alarm. The soldier who is ringing the bell is wearing a heavy coat and gloves. There is snow on the ground. The graffiti on the bell reads, 'duck ye nut'. Gas-releasing weapons were developed during World War I and eventually became commonly used in attacks. The results were painful and horrific. [Original reads: 'Gas alarm in the front line.'] digital.nls.uk/74545988

The soldier is wearing a long overcoat, gloves and a steel helmet. Gas was developed as a weapon during World War I. It caused widespread panic and fear amongst the men, due to the horrific damage and pain it could inflict. [Original reads: 'OFFICIAL PHOTOGRAPH TAKEN ON THE FRONT IN FRANCE. Photograph of postal employees in the Postal Savings Office, New York City
Smithsonian Institution
Date: October 13, 1914 Object number: A.2009-42 Medium: postcard stock; photo-emulsion Description: Post Office Department employees assigned to the postal savings system service in New York City, New York. The Department began accepting individual savings deposits in 1911. It offered account holders the post office's convenient location and hours and the security of depositing funds in a federal institution. Banking reform and the growing economy pushed the postal savings system into obsolescence. The Post Office Department accepted the last deposits in 1966 and brought the system to its end by paying out interest and disbursing funds to account holders and state governments over the next two decades.
